Couple Owns a Lot of Real Estate, Not Enough Savings

Allen Wittert and Celia Dyer own two homes and are considering buying a third. But does tying up more of their assets in real estate make financial sense?

Last year, the couple and their two children, ages 10 and 14, moved to Houston where Ms. Dyer began a new job as a business analyst for a software company. Mr. Wittert, 51, is a painter who sells his work through a network of galleries. He also freelances for ad agencies. The couple’s combined wages are about $210,000 a year. Mr. Wittert’s monthly’ earnings vary greatly but average about $3,000.
